Our lovely illustrator friend Lynnie Zulu master of our SS12 King's print had a mention in Paper Mag :) YAY!

Tell me more about the Fanny & Jessy's collection. What was the process of that collaboration?

I met up with Fanny & Jessy after their first day of researching for their new collection. They sourced some fantastic material of Eskimo and Native American dressed. They browsed my sketchbooks and there appeared to be some interesting correlations between our work -- my native androgynous characters and also the color palette which linked well with their styles.
The project naturally evolved, the characters became more embellished with beards, symbols and motifs and soon became a wonderful organic jumble of king's faces. I then tessellated the illustrations for print. Two different prints were produced for the collection, which I'm happy to say will feature in British Vogue's march issue! Exciting times!

Creatives clubbing together in the 'culture factory'

It doesn't look much from the outside.

Triangulated by the bourgeois coffee shops of Broadway Market, the ghostly arches of London Fields and the takeaway joints of South Hackney, you'll find a dour grey-bricked building with Sixties signage and nondescript windows.

But press the buzzer next to the steering-wheel door (odd, that) and a whole menagerie of madness opens up. A wander down its stark corridors could mean you stumbling across stylist Jacqueline White hosting a rude T-shirt-making workshop. Or bumping into indie band The Duke Spirit rehearsing for their latest gig. Or maybe two ladies on sewing machines, making jackets for Lady Gaga.

It's all part of the creative hub that is Netil House - a "culture factory" where arty folk toil away in studios to produce a huge array of work.

Across London such communities thrive, whether it's Brick Lane's Old Truman Brewery, Bethnal Green's Rich Mix Centre or Islington's Arts Factory. Then there's the "punk aesthetic" of Bloomsbury's Horse Hospital where avant-gardists have sought succour since 1993.

"I envisaged it as a creative space like Warhol's Factory, where people can come and do what they wanted," says founder Roger K Burton. "We're home for nomads who have nowhere else to go ..."

Many of these places wouldn't exist were it not for London's myriad disused buildings. Take Utrophia, which transformed its ex-ice cream factory home in Deptford to host a "Cryptic Lagoon" (think giant swamp with smoke machine) and giant zeppelin. Currently looking for new premises, co-founder Jono Allen says: "We find new places by cycling around and looking out for derelict buildings."

Netil House had a similar genesis. The erstwhile community college, council offices and squat had been derelict for 15 years before 29-year-old life coach Leo Lawson-O'Neil laid eyes on it in 2009.

"There were 30,000 tyres on the ground floor, the electric had been stripped out and there was human excrement on the floors. I thought, 'I'll make this happen.' Everyone thought I was nuts ..."

Thanks to cheap rent (£200 a month upwards), small start-up companies flooded in, including fashion designers (the Gaga-favoured Fanny and Jessy), cake bakers, a Pilates studio, branding consultants and a tattoo parlour. There's even a 5,000 sq ft warehouse space, hired for events/parties (Dizzee Rascal recently shot a music video there). Netil also lends itself to the pop-up vogue - there have been transient nail-bars and restaurants (Shacklewell Nights), while next month its roof terrace opens up to become a bar with panoramic views. Meanwhile, on Saturdays there's the adjoining Netil Market, which has crafts and food stalls.

The colourful mishmash of enterprises working inside culture houses spawns all manner of ventures. It's not unusual for, say, a band using Netil's in-house recording studio to hire the photographer down the corridor to take promo shots. Moreover, the venues foster a semi-bohemian environment for its denizens. Indeed, many firms want to buy into the cool cachet of culture houses. Netil is deluged with requests from accountants, mechanics and IT firms desperate to work there - all rebuffed by Lawson-O'Neil, who wants to "retain the vibe you get from squats".

Culture-houses aren't new but since last October the number of co-working spaces in Europe has risen 19 per cent. "Thanks to corporate downsizing, creative people pushed out of the office suddenly became independent workers," says Joel Dullroy from co-working magazine Deskmag.

Working alongside like-minded souls is the thing.

As Lawson-O'Neil says: "People are excited to be here. We've had problems - last winter there was no heating - but it's the spirit that counts."

The idea came from Fanny and Jessy, a British designer duo who, to promote their third Spring/Summer 2011 collection called “Watch this Face” virtually “sneaked in” and livened up all main parties, shows and events of London Fashion Week: they handed out masks depicting their own faces to guests, models, party people, and amid flashes and spotlights, they thus advertised, as the faces of themselves, their avant-garde line. A funny and provoking idea, unusual just like the garments they design. Breaking the rules. This seems the designers’ motto, who have already won over popstars such as Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Saint Saviour from Groove Armada. And provocation is a firm feature since their debut: the first collection, called “I Hope You Die Soon” was immediately a hit, the second one,“Vaniloquence”, was shown off-schedule, and some pieces were sported by miss Gaga during her world tour. The distinctive features in Fanny and Jessy’s collections: refined designs and sporty silhouettes, unconventional materials and various techniques.

The Spring/Summer 2011 collection features an ultra-feminine approach and puts aside the unisex look, a common denominator of the other collections.    Embellishments prevail: strong details like golden inserts, buttonholes and décor jewelry that become a whole with the clothes.  The color palette ranges from glossy black to nude, including touches of prints in super-bright nuances.   The prints are created by designer Romain Chevalé: drawings of faces popping out of the fabric like a kind of “human virus”, explain the two designers. The style is fresh, experimental, unusual.

Speaking with Fanny and Jessy is much like chattering with friends as any question leads you down a random tangent as the pair are masterfully witty and have an infectious laughter. This informed yet tongue and cheek attitude is reflected in their deigns and just another reason why we here at Fashion156 adore the duo.

Continuing on from my in studio visit last week I discuss the idea of ‘quintessentially English’ with the girls, as I learn that if Fanny has her way you may soon see Mr Darcy in Hyde Park, dressed in Fanny and Jessy, killing chickens.

For SS11 you incorporated a lot of embellishment noticeable in your shoes shall you be playing more with that for AW11?

J: Definitely.

F: We’re always looking at jewellery.

J: It’s the ethnic side of our inspiration which we always come back to. This is the first time we got jewellery specifically made for it in the form of these gold coins. They have the cross section of cows heads on them.

You always cite your love of the quintessentially English aesthetic; if you could define it as a certain person dressed in a certain outfit in a certain place, what would you choose?

Do you have any plans to do a film for AW11?

J: We’re thinking about doing one revolving around an image and creating a mood rather than a production.

F: So no Mr. Darcy running around wearing our cloak, killing chickens in Hyde Park……… (laughter)…that’ll be for our movie.

What challenges have you been facing with this collection?

F: We’re doing some knitwear this season which is quite difficult because we knew nothing about it. We tried to knit one big image into a jumper but you can’t really do that unless you find someone who is will to sit there and loop each individual stitch for free.

Also we’re in that awkward place where we're getting a lot of orders but not enough to take it to the factory so we’re stuck with production. So a big part of fashion week will be looking for more stockists.

I know you’re stocked at Machine-A, if you could take over their window for a day what would you do?

F: I think we’d get loads of old stuffed animals and have them in cages and then have films going on.

J: It would be nice to have something live though, something continually evolving…..

F: A dissection lesson!

FASHION 156 Designer Track Week 2

When you enter Fanny and Jessy's studio you are instantly hit by a wave of energy. The studio is calm and uncrowded as one intern works on patterns. The walls are busy as images of 101 inspirations hit you at once yet they have order. Then you meet Fanny and Jessy and you realise where this current is being omitted from. Jessy is a burst of energy as she talks enthusiastically while Fanny extremely sharp witted, has an air of tranquility about her as Jessy tells me how working as a design duo Fanny brings balance often reigning her in. As they finish each others sentences and can communicate to one another with just one look you begin to slowly understand their dynamic as they are essentially each others brain. As they talk you note their genuine excitement about their collection, approaching it with the same zeal you would your first.

So when we last spoke you mentioned the Hunterian museum as a key influence where did this stem from?

Fanny: A friend recommended it and we were so inspired when we went.

Jessy: We also went to the John Simmons museum which was quite influential, not quite so literally but more in the sense of Englishness and collecting things and the intricacy.

And was there any particular image that struck you and made you stop and say this is the direction we need to go in?

J: The picture of the open rat we sent over.

F: And also things like the stomach linings and the textures. I mean they had the stomach of a whale which is interesting to think of these textures in terms of fabric.

How is it affecting fabric choices?

J: We’re using a lot of wax cotton and leather – well we always use a lot of leather but this time it's almost like skin.

F: We have one fabric that a lot of people say reminds them of Silence of the Lambs when he makes a suit out of skin.

How did the dissection trip come about?

J: After the Hunterian we were like we should try to do that ourselves and we found some books in the British library that actually told you how to do it. My Mum has this chicken obsession. Every time I go home there is another hutch of rare breed chickens. She drives across the country to find the right female to mate with the male. They’re like Polish Frizzles, Light Sussexes etc.

F: They’ve got feathery feet and heads…..

Me: So not your average chicken....

F: Oh no! We only like to dissect the best chickens!....

J: But there are always things dying there (Fanny's family's farm) so I asked her (Fanny's Mum) to save us a few. And we went down for the weekend. We had loads to examine – 2 pheasant from Jess’ Mum, 3 chickens and some chicks. We started of on these baby chicks but they ended up a bit wrong so we ended up a bit wrong so we ended up feeding them to my little brother’s snake. We could show images of that but then we thought....

Yeah on the blog your previous images had to carry a warning…..

J: I saw that! I loved it! ha. The reason my step brother had to kill it (chicken) was because it was really ill.

F: We didn’t just go round killing animals.

J: I don’t think I could actually kill it..... But with the dissection we actually got quite good at it. After all the little chicks we had one big chicken. We did it really carefully.

F: It’s fine once you do it carefully, you can properly see it.

J: You can actually take the bits out as they all have their own membrane and they’re completely intact.

So how is this influencing your structure of garments?

J: It’s all quite angular and incisionary.

F: Some of the seam lines are from the dissection guides.

And how is it affecting colour palette?

Both: It was the blue which we first got from it.

F: It was the blue in the membrane and in the eggs....

J: in the gizzards, there was that amazing blue...

F: and the fertilized egg. I mean the chick was already dead we just opened it up, and then there were the gross yellowy colours…………

Abstract inspiration?

Our most abstract point of inspiration has been the dissection of birds this season. Jess lives on a farm in Somerset so we took a trip there to mutilate some dead birds her mum had been collecting for us! We dissected a couple of baby chicks, and a light Sussex bantam chicken and a couple of pheasant. This was the beginning of our research as the Hunterian Museum had played a big part of inspiring us for this season.

We like to be influenced by the dark and sinister. The Hunterian museum was a brilliant starting point as it captures all the odd and abnormal bodies that have been affected by unknown diseases or conditions and then meticulously studied in the 1800's. Not only does this idea of the discovery influence us, it's the curiosity of quintessential Englishness that is something we are both intrigued by. We have an affiliation to old/traditional beautiful Englishness and this kind of ancient human research is all incredibly influential.

Last week we announced our Designer Tracking Series where we will be following 14 of our favourite designers in the run up to LFW as we track them from collection conceptualization to completion as they unveil their designs at LFW. Yesterday we caught up with William Richard Green and Kirsty Ward . Today we check-in with Fanny and Jessy.

Last season you took on LFW guerilla style ambushing parties with your SS11 collection any hints on your AW11 plan of attack?

Shhh! naughty its a secret.

In your introduction (to this series) you mentioned you liked to be influenced by the dark, the sinister, the strange and the abnormal if you were to stage a fashion presentation in an Old Curiousity Shop what would you do and why? We would integrate the clothes into the exhibition, so they were an interactive part of the shop by displaying the collection in gigantic old bell jars to make the clothes look like taxidermied animals. We could make up fake historical and cultural descriptions of what they were and have them on a tour. "The Famous Fanny and Jessy Clothing Taxidermist Tour!"

We hear you have also been dissecting birds in preparation for AW11, do you see this having a Renaissance effect on the way you structure clothes for AW11?

We looked at the way scientists used to dissect birds and animals which inspired the pattern cutting for this collection. When we practised the dissecting procedure ourselves we became fascinated by the way the birds were made up of layers that you could peel back to reveal another section. Everything fits together so perfectly almost like a treasure chest of jewels each with their own delicate membrane so that idea also became a factor of this season's garments.

You've expressed your love for all things English when thinking in terms of LFW what is it's unique selling point and where do you see yourselves in it?

Outside! haha LFW and London as a city is so unique as it gives young designers a chance to become noticed. People come to London to be part of the creative world here because the industry seems to have more time for new desingers and there is a larger avenue for them to be recognised, perhaps its because the youth culture here is much stronger than the other fashion capitals. What are the major struggles emerging designers in London face, in your opinion? There are so many struggling young designers in London, so one of the biggest struggles has to be competing with everyone else to find your place and to get noticed.

Cult favourites of Lady Gaga and Rihanna, we are thrilled that London’s hottest new duo Fanny & Jessy return for Spring Summer 2011 with an exclusive capsule line for release on NOT JUST A LABEL. This season Fanny and Jessy�took on LFW guerilla-style. Models dressed in the SS11 collection wearing Fanny or Jessy masks ambushed parties and events giving a whole new meaning to the impromptu fashion show.

This marked the duos third collection and saw them veer away from their previous unisex aesthetic to instead embrace the feminine form in all its 90's supermodel glory. Excess glamour and raw sensuality is the only way to describe the collection.

Nude tones, slick black, sheer fabrics with pops of acid colour and overtly luxe jewellery meld in this hedonistic world that lies somewhere between a 90's Versace ad campaign, a cocktail party�and a rave.

What appeals to me most about this collection though is the attitude it exudes-fearless and empowered sensuality.

MACHINE-A will be launching the arrival of the new AW10 collection by Fanny and Jessy in to the store. The pieces will be exhibited upstairs in the store whilst their new film ‘Vaniloquence’ by Danny Sangra will be showing downstairs in the Machine-A gallery space.

VANILOQUENCE is Fanny and Jessy's second collection. They have designed the collection for an androgynous,unisex audience. The collection is dark and polished, yet grungy, with a sporty silhouette. Pieces are intricately constructed using materials such as corduroy, knit, mesh, ghetto net, leather, tapedeck, denim, waxed cotton, jersey, power net and lycra.

“Vaniloquence” is the second film that Danny Sangra has directed for design-duo Fanny and Jessy and will be showing at two intervals during the evening. Fanny And Jessy have been working with Danny since their first collection ‘I hope you die soon’, in which he has been responsible for their popular printed t-shirt designs.

“It’s a good combination as they [Fanny and Jessy] trust me to make something they will like. It’s great to be able to work on prints with them and make their films. Also Rowdy Superst*r created the perfect fitting soundtrack. He chopped and sewed together a surreal dark wonderland soundtrack.” -Danny Sangra

It’s been a while since I did one of these, but I’m making up for it with one gigantic post.

Meet Fanny & Jessy, two young designers barely out of their London College of Fashion diapers and already making a splash on the fashion scene. They showed their second collection, Vaniloquence, to great acclaim during London Fashion Week and recently Lady Gaga was spotted wearing one of their jackets (as well as some hideous pink shorts… but that’s a different story).

With their perfect mix of East London edginess, unisex pieces and the Gaga on their side, they’re about to take over the universe soon, so let me introduce you to the brains behind Fanny & Jessy… Fanny & Jessy!

Alex: Hello there, I’m Alex. Who are you?
F&J: Frances Usher, 23 and Jessie Jobst, 24, both from Somerset.

A: Tell me about ‘Vaniloquence’.
F&J: It’s our second collection, it was shown off-schedule at London Fashion Week for AW10. Vaniloquence means vain or foolish talk, which represented our mood at the time.
It’s a great word. Must start using it in conversation as of now…

A: What/who inspires you?
F&J: It changes all the time …. but right now we’re inspired by Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama and Italian film director Federico Fellini.

A: Lady Gaga recently wore some of your pieces. Did you both die and go to heaven?
F&J: Lady Gaga wearing Fanny and Jessy is pretty amazing yeah…we’re proud to say that the only time Lady Gaga was caught dressing down she was wearing our jacket!!

A: How important is it for celebs to be spotted wearing clothes from a young label like yourself?
F&J: Its a good way of raising the profile of the brand and getting recognition because they are in the public eye so much…. but it’s still important to us that it’s the right kind of person.
So no Katie Price then…

A: Would you ever collaborate with a high street retailer?
F&J: Yes, we would like to work with Topshop!
Erm… lovely people at Topshop, you reading this? Get on it, stat!

A: F&J has quite a unisex following. Why not just make a menswear line?
F&J: Because we’re girls and we like making clothes that we can wear, I think we sub-consciously design for ourselves more than anyone else, and it just so happens we like wearing boys clothes too.

A: In 5 years time, where will I find Fanny & Jessy?
Hopefully in respected department stores across the world.

A: One last one: Snog, marry, avoid, The Ginger Edition: Vivienne Westwood, Sarah Ferguson, Mick Hucknall
F&J: Snog, Vivienne, marry, Fergie…royalty baby, avoid: Mick..eugh.

It's almost hard to believe that Fanny and Jessy, who are a London-based design duo hailing from Somerset, only graduated in 2009 from the London College of Fashion since the duo have literally exploded onto the fashion scene. If you don't know about them, get to know.

Their AW10 collection titled Vaniloquence follows their debut AW09 collection I Hope You Die Soon, which is more pared down then their first collection. Vaniloquence is a blend of unisex styling and Alexander Wang-esque tailoring. Mixing mesh, leather and fringing, I draw a comparison with Wang for the experimental yet classic shapes; and with the significant sportswear influence such as the boxy shoulders, this collection is full of must have separates, which are so very now, yet also pieces for the future. The Fanny and Jessy girl is feminine and self-assured, who knows how to leave a lasting impression without beating you around the head with her attitude.

Their fans include Saint Saviour of Groove Armada, Sarah Harding of Girls Aloud, Rihanna and most recently the fabulous and offbeat Lady GaGa has been spotted wearing their pieces on her Monster's Ball world tour.
